New Orleans: Various Publishers, 1959-60. Two vintage travel guides for tourists for the city of New Orleans. Each features listings and maps, ads for restaurants, bars, burlesque, hotels, salons, local events. The city's WVUE-TV television station began in 1959, and in November 1960, its public schools began desegregation, with Ruby Bridges attending William Frantz Elementary.
"Hotel Greeters" (Vol. 29 No. 6, April 1959, saddle-stapled, 28pp, 5.75 x 9 inches) is a digest magazine, showcasing "America's Most Interesting City" in b/w photos, ads for Jefferson Downs, Pat O'Brien's, Betty Picone's "Drinkatorium," pecan pralines, bar-b-q, Spring Fiesta Pageant, map of "principal thorofares and highways" (brief ink notations), 809 Club featuring Chris Owens and her Maraca and "Calypso" Girls, lists (hotels, libraries, schools, points of interest, churches), and rear cover ad for Gray Line glass-top coaches. "Guide for Vistors" (December 15, 1960, twice monthly, saddle-stapled, 4 x 11 inches) is a folding brochure doubling as a mailer, with pinup cover photo for Christmas, reads more like a phone book, with b/w photos for many similar locations, including 809 Club and Chris Owens, 500 Club with Tee Tee Red and Alouette Le Blanc, El Morocco with Sheeba and Blaze Storm, Sho-bar with Patti White and Kitty Kilowatts, Old French Opera House with Candie Bar, Poodle Patio with Wild Cherry (Afro-Cuban exotic), and Madame Francine's with Jada.
