    This is an
Original 8"x10" (approx.) Columbia Pictures Black and White Still
    , with the
    ORIGINAL COLUMBIA PRODUCTION SNIPE
on the verso. The two-punch binding holes at the bottom were done by Columbia.
    Note this is an
ORIGINAL COLUMBIA PICTURES MASTER STILL PHOTO
, from the original master set prepared by Columbia for internal use, and never intended for general or public use. A Columbia Master Still is characterized by (1) no Still number written on the image negative, (2) a penciled (and later ink stamped) number written on the verso which identifies the assigned Still number, (3) usually the Columbia Still photographer is indicated on a wet stamp, and (4) a production snipe which often contains much more detail on the actors shown in the image. More than one Master set was often prepared, and Keybook Stills are sometimes seen with the tab or hinge with binding holes at one side usually with the "MPAA Approved" green ink wet stamp (although most often the tab/hinge is cut away to reduce the Still to standard size). This Master Still process exists for Columbia productions from at least the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s, with a different format used in the 1950s to 1970s. The Master Still is the most important level of Columbia Stills, representing a Still that was struck from very close to the original negative, in only a handful of copies, and long before the large print run of Stills distributed to theaters.
Also note the Columbia wet stamp in the upper right verso, where specific information on the Still is included, such as date of Hays approval and when the negative was released to New York. This wet stamp was used by Columbia in the mid-1930s and seems to appear only on the "prime" Master Stills.
A true photographic Still, not a computer generated print or scan. This is an

used to promote the film on its original release.
